Highly Sought New Jersey End Visiting WVU

This week will certainly be a busy one for Sherard Cadogan, a top-shelf recruit at defensive end, who is from Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Over the summer, Cadogan sorted through his list of nearly 30 scholarship offers and this fall, he targeted five schools where he is taking official visits -- Pitt, Wisconsin, West Virginia, South Carolina and Michigan State. He’s already taken official visits to Pitt and Wisconsin and Monday night, Cadogan told EerSports.com, “Next I’m going to WVU.”

“I’m leaving Wednesday night. I’m driving. I got practice and then I’ll just drive out there.

“I got a game Saturday night. I’ll get there late Wednesday night, hang out with them all day Thursday and leave early on Friday.”

Experiencing a nationally televised Thursday night ESPN prime time game in Morgantown is something Cadogan is excited about.

“A lot of people around here say West Virginia is a great team with a great campus -- great football,” he said. “I haven’t been there. I’m very interested to see how the campus is and how the fans are.”

Trevor Demko is the lone defensive line recruit for 2010 with whom the Mountaineers have received a verbal pledge from up to this point, so Cadogan could find a home on the defensive line, if he ends up at WVU.

“It seems like they want to play defense over there. I like the way they play defense,” he said.

Cadogan was graded a 76 from ESPN Scouts Inc and ranked the No. 74 defensive end prospect for 2010. He could add depth on WVU’s defensive line, a unit that will return all three starters next season: end Julian Miller, nose tackle Chris Neild and tackle Scooter Berry, along with reserves Larry Ford, Josh Taylor and Jorge Wright.

What has caught so many college coaches’ eyes is Cadogan’s speed and pursuit of the football.

“They like my speed and the way I get off the ball,” he said. “On the defensive line, they like my explosiveness.”

In terms of WVU, Cadogan explained, “They feel like I can help them at their rush end. They like the way I run.”

WVU defensive backs coach David Lockwood has been recruiting Cadogan, keeping regular contact with him every week since the summer.

“He came to my school last week to talk with me and see how things were going,” said Cadogan. “He calls me every week. He’s a great coach to talk to. This Thursday, I get to talk to him a little more. I can’t wait to talk to all of the coaches.”

Defensive end is not the only position at which Cadogan excels -- he doubles as a threat at tight end and explained, “I look to play both sides of the ball … whatever helps the team.”

After his visit to Morgantown, Cadogan is slated to check out South Carolina, when the Gamecocks host Kentucky on Oct. 10, and then Michigan State, on Oct. 24, when the Spartans welcome in Iowa. He said he expects to make a commitment “probably by October” once he’s rounded out his five recruiting trips of this fall.

Aside from producing prominently on the football field, Cadogan is a distinguished student, one who earned a 3.8 GPA as a junior at Camden Catholic. He plans on studying engineering in college, therefore, finding a first-class academic program will be “another big thing” in the prep star’s ultimate selection of a school.

Cadogan said Robert Clark, a corner back from Dwyer High, in Palm Beach Gardens Fla., who verbally committed to the Mountaineers for the 2010 class, spoke with him about WVU football.

“He told me a lot about West Virginia,” Cadogan said. “He just said the coaches are great. He’s a good friend with coach Lockwood.

“I’m going to be there for four years. I’ve got to see how the coaches are.”
